ANN ARBOR (WWJ) — Ann Arbor police on Thursday released body camera footage showing the aftermath of a home explosion earlier this week that sent a man in his 70s to the hospital.
The source of the explosion, which happened around 6 a.m. Monday on Princeton Street, was two 20-lb. propane tanks, Ann Arbor police officials said.
The video released Thursday shows officers racing to the home, which was fully engulfed in flames when they showed up at 6:09 a.m.
Just two minutes later the video captures the home suddenly collapsing, throwing debris into the street. At that point, police officials said firefighters did not know at the time if more explosions would be coming.
The lone occupant of the home, a man in his 70s, was quickly found after first responders showed up. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The home is said to be a total loss.
Ann Arbor police officials say the fire department’s quick actions kept other nearby homes from catching fire.
The Ann Arbor Fire Department is reminding residents to “never use portable propane tanks inside a residence due to this explosive risk and the risk of carbon monoxide.”
