SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - For the second time in three months, an anti-abortion clinic in Southfield was struck by vandals, destroying windows and writing graffiti on the building as recently as last Friday, officials said.
The back door and parking lot of Mother and Unborn Baby Care pregnancy center located on Southfield Road near Ten Mile had the message "If abortions aren't safe, neither are you. Jane," sprayed on with red paint, WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene.
"That is a similar message that was spray painted on other... centers around the country after the Roe v. Wade decision was overturned," Langton said.
While the graffiti appears to have been cleaned up since it was discovered on Sept. 16, Langton said that clinic administrators are upset and saddened by the attacks which appear to have been done by a militant group named "Jane's Revenge."
According to the Detroit Catholic, Jane's Revenge is a pro-abortion rights group that emerged in May of 2022 after the draft opinion of the U.S Supreme Court decision regarding Roe v. Wade was leaked.
The Southfield-based pregnancy center was first attacked back on June 24, where all 14 ground windows were smashed in and graffiti referencing Jane was also left, the Detroit Catholic reported.
Another pregnancy center in Dearborn Heights was also vandalized in the same month with doors and windows destroyed and the building tagged with spray paint.
The Detroit Catholic reported that vandalism against anti-abortion clinics has been seen nationwide and spurred on by officials who have labeled the pregnancy centers as "fake."
Langton reported the Southfield-based pregnancy center is a non-profit organization and counseling center founded in 1984 to assist abortion-vulnerable women in keeping their babies.
According to the clinic's website, they offer free pregnancy tests, free ultrasounds, and options counseling for clients. Women who decide to continue their pregnancies are given material and emotional support for up to two years after the delivery of their baby.
“We are saddened by this act of malice and pray that these persons repent,” McGrath said to the Detroit Catholic. “Mother and Unborn Baby Care has been saving mothers and their babies for over 35 years. We have shown women nothing but love and compassion. Mothers return with the child they were considering aborting to tell us how grateful they are that we were there for them when they were troubled and desperate."
Mother and Unborn Baby Care center is working closely with police to catch the vandals responsible for the damage, Langton reported, but so far, police have no suspects in custody.
“We trust in God’s will and His power,” McGrath added. “They provide the way of peace amidst adversity.”
