DETROIT (WWJ) -- While working to expand its work on artificial intelligence technology, Apple has plans for a new facility here in Michigan.

The tech giant says it plans to spend more than $500 billion nationwide over the next four years, including opening an Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit.

At the Detroit facility, plans call for Apple engineers to work closely with experts from local universities, including Michigan State, to teach small and midsize businesses how to implement AI. The public will also be able to take free classes, in-person and online, about project management and manufacturing.

The exact location has not been confirmed.

The move from Apple is the company's latest in recent months to push forward into the world of AI, as Apple said it will be looking to add about 20,000 research and development jobs across the United States.

In a news release, Apple said this pledge to expand its U.S. business builds on Apple’s long history of investing in American innovation and advanced high-skilled manufacturing, and will support a wide range of initiatives that focus on artificial intelligence, silicon engineering, and skills development for U.S. students and workers.

“We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we’re proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our country’s future,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “From doubling our Advanced Manufacturing Fund, to building advanced technology in Texas, we’re thrilled to expand our support for American manufacturing. And we’ll keep working with people and companies across this country to help write an extraordinary new chapter in the history of American innovation.”

Apple also recently announced it will be opening a store in Downtown Detroit sometime in 2025.
