(WWJ) A Detroit man accused of shooting two men, including at least one student, at an apartment near Central Michigan University has been taken into custody.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Office said their detectives took Kenneth Thomas into custody in the Detroit area with the help of Michigan State Police.

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation revealed Thomas and “several” others had come up to Mt. Pleasant last Friday (4/23) to hang out at local bars and restaurants. When those bars and restaurants closed down, Thomas and his friends heard about an after hours gathering at Deerfield Apartments just across the street from the southern end of campus and went there.

The group from Detroit and the rest of the party got into an altercation. During the fight; Thomas left to get a gun out of his car, came back to the party and started firing “without regard for human life,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“Kenneth and the others from Detroit have no connections to our community, the apartment complex and/or Central Michigan University,” the press release from the Sheriff’s Office read.

Two men were injured. 21-year-old CMU quarterback, John Keller, was shot in the chest and is in critical condition, according to his family’s Go Fund Me Page set up to cope with medical expenses.

“He is a loving son, sibling, and friend to many,” his family wrote on the page. He graduated from a high school in North Canton, Ohio.

A 23-year-old man was also taken to the hospital. At last check, he was in stable condition.

The Isabella County Sheriff said they worked “tirelessly” interviewing over a dozen witnesses and reviewing a large amount of social media evidence to develop a suspect.

Charges will be announced later.
