MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A Madison Heights man is facing charges in connection to the beating death of a man who family members say was trying to help a dog that was being abused.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office announced that 68-year-old Rodney Beasley has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, which is a 4-year felony.

Beasley was arraigned in the 43rd District Court and given a $100,000 cash or surety bond.

The charge reportedly stems from an incident on Christmas Eve.

At approximately 7:39 p.m., Madison Heights Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of an unresponsive man at a manufactured home community near the 26000 block of Dequindre. The man was identified as 60-year-old Robert Cavanaugh, of Madison Heights.

It appeared that Cavanaugh had suffered from blunt force trauma.

First responders from the Madison Heights Fire Department performed life-saving measures and transported Cavanaugh to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Responding officers began an on-scene investigation due to the suspicious circumstances, which allegedly led to the arrest of Beasley.

Authorities said the cause and manner of death are pending from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is why Beasley was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. More charges could be added once the Medical Examiner finishes their investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Strongarone at 248-837-2737 or the Madison Heights Police Department at 248-585-2100.
