DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Police in Wayne County are turning to the public for help in finding two suspects involved in an attempted robbery that left one man dead and the victim injured.
Dearborn Heights police said the victim, a 30-year-old man, was returning home around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, when two armed suspects approached his vehicle while in the driveway.
Police said the men wielded handguns and tried to rob the homeowner before he could get out of his pickup truck.
According to authorities, the victim tried to get away from the suspects by reversing his truck and taking off. One suspect, a 31-year-old man from Melvindale, was injured after he clung to the truck's door.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries the next day.
Police said the other suspect opened fire at the victim's truck as he sped off, missing the vehicle and striking a home. The victim ended up crashing his truck a short distance from his residence.
That suspect then got into a getaway vehicle driven by a third suspect and left the scene.
As police and first responders got to the scene, they found the victim injured in the wreck, but said he declined medical treatment.
Chief Jerrod S. Hart said, "this does not appear to be a random incident and is believed to be tied to an event the victim attended in the hours leading up to the robbery."
"Nonetheless, the robbery resulted in a loss of life and a suspect firing a weapon in a neighborhood, striking a nearby home," Hart added. "Thankfully, no innocent community members were harmed."
Anyone with information regarding this incident has been asked to contact the Dearborn Heights Police Department's Sergeant Derwick at 313-277-6770.
