Authorities respond to stinky Redford home with dozens of cats, standing water after neighbors complain

Authorities respond to alleged 'cat hoarder' home in Redford

REDFORD (WWJ) -- People living near a home Redford were relieved to see fire crews and animal control on their street on Thursday.

Neighbors told WWJ's Darrylin Horne they've been complaining about a house that has been stinking up the block for years, and authorities finally responded.

Neighbors on Gaylord Street between Eight Mile Rd. and Grand River Ave. said for at least three years they've been begging for authorities to come and look into the situation at this particular house.

They said the man living there has several dozen cats inside, while rodents and flies have spread from his home to other people's backyards.

"What I saw, the entire basement flooded, several feet of standing water, only visible because fire crews broke through the windows to get inside," Horne reported from the scene.

Several neighbors on the street told Horne they're just happy to see that something is finally being done.

That includes Martez Moore, who said he's been cutting the man's grass and calling police for years trying to get a response.

"About three cats turned into 40 cats," Moore said. "And the smell was just, it was horrible, for the last two, three years
I've been calling animal control. You know, all the neighbors... we pretty much stick together, take care of the yards and stuff. But he was just one of the sore thumbs over here that just let everything go."

Redford Township Police D/Sgt. Edward French said in a news release issued later Thursday that Animal Control was made aware of that home that "had an issue with feral cats and offensive odors."

Animal Control responded for a well-being check, and found the residence to be in a "deplorable condition".

The homeowner was located and after a brief investigation, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, French said.

Th Redford Township Fire Department assisted Animal Control with accessing the home safely due to the overwhelming odors, police said.

French added that Animal Control is now working with the Redford Township Building Department to rescue unknown number of cats, and to have the residence cleaned up.

It's unclear whether the resident could face any charges.
