DETROIT (WWJ) - A hours-long standoff is over after an armed man -- who barricaded himself inside a Detroit home following a suspected altercation with his landlord -- surrendered to police early Friday morning.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene at Helen and Lambert Street near Mount Elliott and I-94 on the city's east side where just after 6 a.m. on December 8th, police confirmed the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
"I am looking at a number of police officers now, it appears that they did get some kind of a search warrant and they're going into the home where this barricaded gunman had had police at bay since a little after midnight," Langton reported.
According to Langton, the incident is believed to have started when the suspect -- said to be a man in his 60s -- got into some kind of a dispute with his landlord on Thursday, although exact details remain unclear.
The suspect ended up barricading himself inside the home for roughly six hours before the situation was peacefully resolved -- but police did have a few tense moments.
"[The suspect] may have cut some wires," Langton added. "He did have a 357 with him and he did fire shots at police."
At some point, Langton reported five people were rescued from the home. Authorities said the victims all appear to be unharmed.
"This barricaded situation again, had beenn existence since about midnight now, though, it looks like it's over and police are trying to figure out exactly what happened," Langton said.
The scene still remains very active. No other details were released by police. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
