BELLEVILLE (WWJ) - A high school student in Belleville is in police custody after he was found carrying a gun while at the school on Thursday, administrators said.
According to a school alert sent to parents, officials said police were called to Belleville High School after they received a tip that a student had posted videos online with a weapon.
The student was questioned by police and when searched, a firearm was found in his possession.
The student was immediately taken into custody.
According to school administrators, the student told officers he was carrying the weapon to protect himself due to a ongoing neighborhood conflict.
Police then sought out and removed the other students thought to have been involved in the conflict.
A parent meeting was scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Commons for parents and school officials to discuss the incident.
