SANDUSKY, OHIO (WWJ) You have less than a month to enjoy a beloved Cedar Point ride.
Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio has announced it’s the “final tidal wave” for Snake River Falls, a shoot-the-chutes water ride, after 31 years in operation.
“Snake River Falls debuted as the tallest, steepest and fastest water flume ride in the world,” Tony Clark, Cedar Point’s Director of Communications, wrote in the announcement blog post. “Standing 82 feet over Frontier Town, nobody had never seen anything like it.”
The ride opened in 1993, at 64 feet wide, 32 feet long and 82 feet tall.
“A U-Turn around the river brings you to the top of the drop. And before you know it, you’re plunging back down a 50 degree drop at 40 miles per hour,” its description on the Cedar Point website reads. “Expect to get soaked by the tidal wave created by the boat during the splashdown.”
The minimum height requirement for the Snake River Falls is 48”. Guests with a cervical collar, neck brace, broken collar bone, full arm cast, braced arm cast or full leg cast are not allowed to ride for safety reasons. They’re also required to have “at least three functional extremities”.
As fans of the ride prepare to say goodbye, Clark remembered its unique features like the “exit bridge that traverses over the flume”: “Over the years, we’ve had a blast watching riders analyze just the right timing to either avoid, or stand right in the middle of, the next boat’s 1,920 -square-foot tidal wave.”
Snake River Falls is slated to cease operations on September 2nd to “make way for a future expansion,” Clark said.
“…We honor and respect the past but look forward to future FUN for generations to come,” he said.
The park has planned a special “last splash” send-off celebration for Snake River Falls.
The details of the expansion have yet to be released.
More than 15 million guests have braved the Snake River Falls since it opened 31 years ago. In the meantime, the ride will open daily at noon.
Cedar Point is home to nearly 70 rides.
