DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan's automobile industry got quite the shoutout during the president's State of the Union address.
During his speech on Tuesday night, President Joe Biden stressed the importance of products being made in America and how manufacturing is making a comeback in the U.S. -- publicly recognizing Detroit-based manufacturers, General Motors and Ford.
Biden praised GM and Ford for creating jobs in Michigan by investing billions of dollars to build electric vehicles.
Biden mentioned GM's electric vehicle factory plans and how that's expected to bring 4,000 new jobs to the state. The president added that Ford is investing $11 billion to build EVs, creating 11,000 jobs across the country.
He noted that under his leadership, 369,000 new manufacturing jobs in America were created in 2021.
"Companies are choosing to build new factories here, when just a few years ago they would've gone overseas -- that's whats happening," said Biden.
Along with addressing U.S. manufacturing and the Michigan automobile industry, Biden also touched on a myriad of topics, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the coronavirus, U.S. inflation, voting rights and police reform.
