WIXOM (WWJ) -- A large sink hole is continuing to cause traffic woes on Tuesday morning after it forced the closure of Wixom Road in Oakland County after an apparent break in an underground sewer line the day before.
"It is a big sinkhole right in the middle of Wixom Road, just north of Pontiac Trail between Pontiac Trail and Maple Road," WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene. "And it's basically right in front of Wixom Elementary School, which means parents who are dropping off and picking up their kids are going to have fun for a while."
Officials with the Road Commission for Oakland County closed Wixom Road on Monday afternoon to make repairs to what they called a "void" that formed under a section of the road.
Crews are out Tuesday trying to work on the problem, which Campbell said appears to have been caused by a break in a sewer line. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the sink hole.
The closure is just south of the Wixom Elementary School, near the Michigan Air Line Trail. Drivers were told on Monday that they will need to use an alternative route to get around the problem area.
While access to Wixom Elementary will be maintained north of the closure, some parents were less than thrilled with the circumstances.
“It's going to be a big headache,” said John, whose young daughter attends the school.
“I have to leave 15 minutes early every day just to go around back to a subdivision to get to where I got to go," he told Campbell.
Parents dropping off and picking up kids at Wixom Elementary are urged to use Maple Road to get to the school.
Campbell reported that repairs will take time, "maybe the day, maybe longer until they can get this fixed."
RCOC said it is working with the City of Wixom to investigate and identify what caused the void.
