DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit firefighters scrambled to battle a large fire on Thursday morning after flames consumed an abandoned building on the city's west side.

Fire crews were still battling to extinguish the blaze as the sun rose on a vacant apartment building on Dexter at Cortland in the Dexter-Linwood area, just south of Davison between the Lodge and I-96.

Campbell reported live from the scene where he said fire fighters were pouring water on the six story complex which, thankfully, was empty at the time of the fire.

"They were boarding it up as early as early as this year, but it's now burned," Campell said. "Completely toast."

Crews are still working to determine what caused the blaze, which was deemed a three-alarm fire.

A witness, only identified as SPC, told Campbell the blaze quickly spread.

“Basically, they were saying the fire was on the third floor,
SPC said. "As soon as we got here, it made its way up to the fifth floor in about two minutes. They were the flames as big as an explosion, I would say."

Officials have not confirmed if there was an explosion. No one was injured in the fire, but the cause remains under investigation at this time.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
