SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A 51-year-old Southfield man is hospitalized with serious wounds to his face and upper body after his son allegedly swung a hatchet at him late Monday night, police said.

Southfield police released details about the case shortly after state troopers announced on Tuesday morning they had apprehended a 22-year-old suspect wanted for attempted murder the night before.

Officials confirmed the suspect was the son allegedly involved in the hatchet attack on his father.

According to Southfield police, the incident was first reported to officers just before 11 p.m. in the 25000 block of Orchard Grove, near Telegraph and Franklin Roads. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 51-year-old man who was badly bleeding from severe gashes to his face and upper body.

Police immediately rendered aid until emergency personnel arrived and rushed the man to the hospital where he is said to be in critical condition.

Investigators determined the man had been struck with a hatchet by his 22-year-old son, who was able to drive away from the home before police arrived.

The department issued a "Be on the Look Out" (BOLO) alert to area law enforcement agencies for the son wanted in the attack, which was read by a patrol sergeant with Michigan State Police's Second District.

About 40 minutes later, the trooper spotted a vehicle matching the description from the BOLO on Grand River near W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit. The registration plate also matched the suspect vehicle that Southfield police was searching for.

While the sergeant was able to pull the vehicle over and arrest the 22-year-old man without incident, a search of the vehicle turned up a chilling discovery -- the alleged weapon, a hatchet still caked with blood, inside.

MSP commended the "great awareness" of the trooper that located the vehicle and for taking a dangerous suspect off the street.

Troopers said the 22-year-old man was turned over to the Southfield Police Department who is spearheading the investigation.

The case remains under investigation at this time, including what prompted the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to the contact the Southfield Police Department at (248)-796-5500 reference complaint number 23-16258.
