BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- An Oakland County man is facing charges after his wife's decomposing body was found on the couch during a welfare check.
Bloomfield Township Police said officers discovered the body of 57-year-old Ariane C Grunewald Bluem on Saturday, Sept. 27, on a sofa in a home on Hedegwood, in the area of Franklin and Walnut Lake.
It appeared that Grunewald Bluem had been dead for an extended period of time as her body was "severely decomposed," according to a report released by police on Wednesday.
Officers then went upstairs, where they found the woman's 53-year-old husband, Dirk Grunewald, with multiple knives surrounding him. The man refused to speak directly with officers and would not follow commands, police said.
As a precaution, crisis negotiators and members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to help police get the man safely to a hospital for mental health treatment.
While police called the woman's death "suspicious", it's still not clear how she died.
An autopsy was performed by the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office, but the cause of death was inconclusive. Further examinations are pending.
The husband has since been charged with Failure to Report a Death/Concealing the Death of an Individual. Bond was set at $250,000 cash, no 10%.
Bloomfield Township Police said the investigation is ongoing.
