(WWJ) Grand Valley State University has identified the student whose body was found on the school's Allendale campus over the weekend.
Taylor DeRosa, of Royal Oak, was in her first year at GVSU, officials said Tuesday.
The Grand Valley State University Police Department and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their joint investigation into what they're calling DeRosa's "suspicious death."
Her body was found by a jogger the evening of Saturday, Dec. 12, near the intramural athletic fields and cross-country trail on the campus, about 20 miles west of Grand Rapids.
The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of death has not been fully determined, according to GVSU Police Chief Brandon DeHaan.
DeHaan said, however, it appears at this time that the general public or campus population is not in danger.
DeHaan urged the campus community to be patient, not to rush to any conclusions and to stop spreading false information — particularly on social media. "Misinformation is not helpful to the investigation or to the family of our student," he said, adding that "truthful and accurate updates will come from police authorities and the university when appropriate."
In a letter sent Tuesday to the campus community, GVSU President Philomena Mantella said school leaders' thoughts and prayers are with the DeRosa family during this tragic time.
“Tragedies have a way of focusing our attention to what matters most – the people around us," Mantella wrote. "Keep the student’s family in your thoughts and offer your help and support to those who need it.”
In a statement, Royal Oak Schools said DeRosa was a Royal Oak High School Class of 2020 graduate.
“As we all struggle to process this news, our thoughts go out to Taylor’s family and friends. Taylor had an immensely positive impact on our community, and that influence will help us in our grieving process," the district said. "Our staff is available to support students throughout the week."
ROHS students will soon receive a message in their email that includes information about how to access support staff who are available to help those who are struggling.
“Our community is what gives us the strength to manage immense challenges like this," the district added.
DeRosa's family has created a GoFundMe for memorial expenses at this link.
