MUNISING, Mich. (WWJ) -- The search for two missing kayakers near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Lake Superior has come to an end after crews found a second body over the weekend.
The pair was reported missing the evening of Thursday, Sept. 16 after setting off kayaking on Lake Superior.
Searchers found one of the bodies by Friday afternoon, and ultimately located the other victim’s body later that day.
The conditions for the rescue and recovery efforts were difficult, as the U.S. Coast Guard says winds were blowing at 30 knots, or 34 mph, and waves were up to seven feet.
Authorities have not released any details about either victim, including where they’re from. There has been no word on what exactly happened to the kayakers while they were on the water.
“Our hearts go out to the families of those lost. We searched for them as if they were members of our own family,” said Cmdr. Mike Courtney of U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue in the northern Great Lakes.
Pictured Rocks, with its dramatic multicolored cliffs and unusual sandstone formations, is a popular tourist attraction for hikers, campers and sightseers on the Lake Superior shoreline.
