(WWJ) The body of a young man who went missing in Lake Erie has been recovered in Monroe County.

According to authorities, the boater from Dearborn was presumed drowned on Sunday, after he and a group of people jumped off a boat to go swimming, near Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township.

Hussein Hassoun, 23, was found dead after the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Marine Division resumed their search early Tuesday, and a civilian boater spotted the body in the water, at around 8:45 a.m.

Hassoun was not wearing a life jacket, officials said.

Undersheriff Joe Hammond wants to warn those going out on the water this summer to be safe.

"Our recommendation is if you're not a strong swimmer, anytime you're in open water like that to, you know, make sure you're utilizing life jackets," Hammond said. "Or if you're out boating, the have them readily available, if not wearing them during your time on the water."

An autopsy is scheduled.

The sheriff's office is still investigating the incident, and they want to hear from anyone who has information about what happened. The number to call is 734-240-7530.
