MONROE TWP. (WWJ) -- Monroe County Community College was evacuated and closed on Tuesday due to a bomb threat.

An alert posted late in the morning stated: "The MCCC Main Campus has received a bomb threat and has been evacuated and closed. Please do not come onto campus until further notice. All classes are cancelled for today, Sept. 30, 2025."

The initial alert went out for the main campus, in Monroe Township, at around 10:30 a.m. Later, officials added that the MCCC Whitman Center in Temperance would also be closed for the day.

An evening gala was also canceled.

Officials said the threat came in via email, leading to an evacuation of students and staff. "Roughly a thousand people, I'm told," WWJ Newsradio 950's Jon Hewett said.

Reporting from Monroe Township Tuesday afternoon, Hewett said Michigan State Police were on the scene preventing anyone from entering the campus.

Troopers with bomb-sniffing K9s combed the area.

"I'm told they do believe this is a hoax, but obviously have to go through the precautions of sweeping the buildings here," Hewett said.

MCCC President Kojo Quartey said students and faculty had to get out in a hurry; some of them forced to leave essentials like their cars and their keys behind.

They'll be able to return to pick up those items on Wednesday, when Quartey said classes are set to resume.

No further information regarding what the threat stated, exactly, was released. However, officials said there were several emails sent.

There is also no information about who may have sent the emails, as the investigation continues.

Raisinville Road was closed to through traffic near the MCCC main campus, but has since reopened.
