TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ) -- Prosecutors have filed terrorism and attempted murder charges against the man arrested for a knife attack at a Walmart store in Traverse City. Eleven people were stabbed, but all are expected to survive.
Bradford Gille, 42, of Afton appeared for a video arraignment in 86th District Court on charges of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder.
Gille interrupted the proceeding with an outburst talking about cigarettes, before the Magistrate Tammi Rodgers could finish speaking about his bond.
"You know...you all, like, have the tobacco company, and you're selling cigarettes with fiberglass and chemicals in 'em, just to kill off this population. you know," Gille said. "And you can't really accuse me of anything, you know, when you're doing that..."
As Gille tried to continue speaking, Rodgers silenced his microphone, telling him that she needed to put him on mute so she could continue speaking on her decision regarding his bond.
After making that and other comments, Gille was reminded by his attorney that anything he says can be used against him.
Gille's bond was set at $100,0000 cash or surety; the magistrate calling the accusations the "most heinous" to come before the court in more than 30 years.
There is an update on the victims: A statement from Munson Healthcare on Monday said only one patient remains in serious condition. Five others have been upgraded to fair, and two more are in good condition.
Hospital workers treated two patients who were transferred to another facility. One person was treated and released.
The hospital is also offering psychological and emotional support for residents and workers. Those services will be available through Wednesday.
No motive for the attack has been released, although officials have said the victims appeared to have been chosen at random.
Sheriff Michael Shea praised the quick response by law enforcement officers who arrived within minutes of getting a call about the stabbing. Shea told reporters a group of bystanders intervened and detained Gille in the store's parking lot until police arrived.
Gille is scheduled to appear in court for another hearing on August 6.
