WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - A major hospital system in Michigan said tens of thousands of patients could be at risk after a data breach was discovered in November of last year.

According to Becker's Hospital Review, Ascension Michigan estimated 27,177 patients' personal information was exposed when an unauthorized user accessed its electronic health records between Oct. 15 and Sept. 8 in 2021.

Ascension Michigan became aware of the data breach on Nov. 30 and said personal information attached to patient records could have been accessed.

Medical records include information such as addresses, phone numbers, full names, dates of birth, dates of service, medical diagnoses, Social Security numbers and health insurance identification numbers.

Officials said an internal control review was conducted to better identify ways to protect patient information in the future. Free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services will be offered to patients whose information could be a risk.
