A 45-year-old man from Brighton has died after police said he drove off the eastbound lanes of I -696 in western Wayne County.
He hit a bridge abutment at the interchange of I-96 and 696 early Wednesday and died at the scene.
Police are not releasing the man's name at this time and say an investigation is ongoing.
Unknown is what caused him to leave the freeway and whether it was a medical emergency. WYCD's Steve Grunwald was driving by the scene, so he stopped and tried to help.
"I was able to crawl inside and try to render aid," Grunwald said on WWJ 950. "Unfortunately, we were unable to find a pulse ... He didn't make it."
