NOVI (WWJ) - Authorities say a motorist who crashed along I-696 overnight, sending their passenger to the hospital with serious injuries, was driving under the influence.

The crash happened around 1:20 a.m. Saturday on westbound I-696 underneath the Haggerty Road overpass.

When Michigan State Police troopers arrived on the scene, they located one car crashed into the median and a second car pushed into the right side guardrail.

"Troopers contacted the driver of the vehicle in the median and it was determined the driver was operating under the influence of intoxicants," police said in a statement.

The driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and lodged at the Novi police department.

A passenger was taken to a local hospital and was last listed in guarded condition, according to police.

The second vehicle was determined to be abandoned and unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The freeway ramp to from westbound I-696 to westbound I-96 was closed for several hours while police were investigating the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
