BRIGHTON (WWJ) -- Metro Detroit is surging in COVID-19 cases and hospitals all over the state are reaching capacity, but students at Brighton Area Schools will not be required to mask up in the classroom.

The Brighton school board was considering a mask mandate to be implemented by the superintendent once the COVID-19 numbers increased, but during a meeting on Tuesday night, it was struck down after three hours of comments.

"I respectfully request the district to allow parents to make their own choice when it comes to the masking of children a mask isn't considered a class one medical device and medical decisions should be up to the sole discretion of the parents -- just as they always have," said a parent.

Most of the people in attendance opposed the mask mandate, although there were some parents, students and teachers wearing masks in support.

"Our hospitals are begging us to wear masks and to get vaccinated they are filled to the brim with COVID cases and once again are worn out from constantly pleading their cases for the public -- this community -- to care," said another parent.

During Brighton school board meetings in the past, when issues of quarantining students and mask mandates were brought up, there would be moments of uneasiness; however, there weren't any disturbances last night beside the parents, students and teachers who came out to be heard.
