ROMEO (WWJ) -- One person was killed in a crash that shut down M-53 in northern Macomb County on Monday, according to authorities.
Northbound M-53, immediately north of 32 Mile Road near Romeo, was closed for several hours beginning Monday morning, due to the crash involving a semi-truck and another vehicle. Drivers were urged to avoid the area, with emergency responders on the scene.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said an investigation found that a white Chevy Express van was being driven by Michelle Castanos of Bruce Twp. when it was involved in a crash with a semi trailer.
Castanos, 49, was pronounced deceased at the scene, the sheriff's office said.
The driver of the semi-truck did not report any injuries, and no one else was hurt.
It's unclear what led to the crash as the sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.
M-53 reopened to traffic at around 3:30 p.m.
