(WWJ) You can put away your snow shovels for the time being— but you’ll have to dig out the heaviest of jackets and winter garments.

Metro Detroit will contend with brutal cold throughout the first part of the week.

AccuWeather predicts the worst of it will be Monday and Tuesday, with the mercury plummeting overnight.

“Our low by (Tuesday) morning could be down to one above, with RealFeels maybe 10 below,” said meteorologist Joe Lundberg.

Lundberg said Monday will be in the teens, but RealFeels will be about zero degrees.

The National Weather Service has also issued Special Weather Statement, in effect until 3 p.m Monday for the listening area.

“A combination of lake effect snow showers and gusty west winds near 30 miles per hour may result in instances of blowing snow and reduced visibility today,” the statement reads. “Visibility may drop to less than one mile…and minor snow accumulations may result in slick roads.”

The NWS urges drivers to use extra time to get to their destinations and to exercise caution due to potential variable road conditions and low visibility.

The NWS is forecasting "an extended period of sub-zero wind chills" Monday through Tuesday.

AccuWeather also forecasts the bitter cold will persist into Tuesday. Temperatures will be in their teens during the day and two degrees overnight. During the night, RealFeels will be below zero.

The cold snap is expected to last throughout the week, with temperatures starting to creep up on Wednesday.

AccuWeather predicts the mercury will climb to just above freezing come the weekend.
