DETROIT (WWJ) – A bus driver from Detroit is facing charges after an autistic boy was hit and killed by a car after getting off the bus.

Debra White, 65, is facing one count of second-degree child abuse and one count of failure to stop at a scene resulting in death for the April 6 incident.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office says 13-year-old Zyiar Harris of Detroit was killed after being struck by a car that day in the area of East Nevada and Healy Avenues on the city’s northeast side.

Prosecutors allege White did not activate the bus’s stop lights and stop sign for the teen to safely cross the street after he got off the bus.

The bus driver apparently left the scene, according to authorities, while the driver of the car that hit the boy did stop.

Detroit police officers arrived to the scene around 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, where they found medics providing treatment to the teen.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, authorities said.

The prosecutor’s office says White was a driver for the ABC Bus Company that had carried Harris home from a Detroit Public School that day.

Charges were filed before the teen died on Sunday, and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says the case will be reviewed again after getting reports from the medical examiner’s office.

White was arraigned Sunday in 36th District Court and given a $50,000 personal bond. She is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on April 19.
