WINDSOR, Ont. (WWJ) – As COVID-19 restrictions tighten in Canada, a neighboring casino is set to close for at least three weeks.
Caesars Windsor announced Monday it will close on Wednesday as the Ontario government will temporarily return to Step Two of its "Roadmap to Reopen" with further restrictions to restaurants and casinos.
Casino officials say as a result of the restrictions, they'll temporarily close on Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. through Wednesday, Jan. 26.
All hotel guests will be required to leave the building by noon on Tuesday and the gaming floor must be cleared by midnight the same night.
All marketing programs, concerts, events, hotel and dining reservations are cancelled during the time the casino is closed. Officials said the Live to Rock concert – scheduled for Jan. 20 – will be rescheduled to the summer of 2022, while the Alice Cooper concert on Jan. 27 has been canceled. More details on postponed and canceled events will be released soon.
"The health and safety of our employees and guests remain a priority and we look forward to welcoming you back at a time when it is safe for our community," said Kevin Laforet, President, Caesars Windsor, per a press release.
The announcement comes as Canada, like Michigan, is dealing with another surge of COVID-19, thanks to the omicron variant.
Officials say "these time-limited measures will help blunt transmission and prevent hospitals from becoming overwhelmed as the province continues to accelerate its booster dose rollout."
Other restrictions include remote learning with free emergency child care planned for school-aged children of health care and other eligible frontline workers, according to the Ontario government's website.
WWJ reached out to Caesars Windsor officials for comment on the situation, but they declined to do so.
