DETROIT (WWJ) -- It's release day for Apple's new iPhone Duo, the company's first ever foldable phone, and the lines are long at Apple stores — including the one on Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit.
WWJ's Luke Sloan reported there were about hundred people in line, some who got there as early as 5 p.m. on Thursday, camping out overnight.
"This is a full on Black Friday, launch day-style stakeout here," Sloan said. "People in line have got chairs, they've got blankets and sleeping bags. The occasional food or coffee run is being made."
Brian Mansour said he got in line at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, hoping to get a Duo.
"I love the excitement of camping out; it reminds you of the old days, before COVID, before people kind of stopped doing that," Mansour said. "And I love the comradery of meeting other people who are huge iPhone fans and love it. And (there's) nothing like being at the store on launch day."
Sloan was told the longest line, locally, was at the Apple Store inside the Somerset Collection in Troy.
iPhone Duo is the first-ever foldable iPhone that carries a hefty price tag of nearly $2,000.
Analysts predict the iPhone Duo could give foldables a significant boost. Analysts think that foldable shipments will grow by more than 12% globally. Some people remain skeptical of foldable phones and believe they break easier than a normal phone.
Last week when pre-orders launched, the phone almost instantly got backordered. Apple said they would have a "very limited stock" of the new phones available for walk-ins on October 23.
