(WWJ) — It’s been pretty balmy in Metro Detroit lately, with temperatures climbing into the upper 50s on Wednesday, while we saw the 60s in early February.

But as we all know, this is Michigan, and we’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to winter.

While temperatures will hover around 50 degrees on Thursday, according to AccuWeather, Metro Detroit is expecting a “cold shot” this weekend, with temps plunging to around freezing on Saturday.

“But after that it looks like another warmup, as we head into next week, so it looks like potentially another couple springlike days as we head into the middle portion of next week,” AccuWeather meteorologist John Feerick told WWJ’s Tony Ortiz on this week’s Weather Wednesday segment.

“But then after that it does look like another shot of some cold air, but it doesn’t look like right now the cold air’s gonna have a lot of staying power,” he said, noting we’ll likely see more surges of mild air throughout the end of the month and into March.

That all fits the pattern Metro Detroit has seen this meteorological winter — December through February — according to Feerick, who says the area has been six degrees above average since Dec. 1, which he says “is pretty impressive for that long of a stretch.”

This season hasn’t been much different from last year, which saw the area about five degrees above average, much warmer than the previous few years dating back to 2020, Feerick said.

The area hasn’t seen a ton of snow this year, but Feerick isn’t ruling out another dose of it in the near future.

“It doesn’t look like we’re gonna have much chance the next week or so, but we will oftentimes get some snow into April, so don’t write off winter just yet,” he said.
