(WWJ) -- In response to the omicron variant and rising COVID-19 cases, authorities in Canada have added a new requirement to enter their county.

Starting on Tuesday, Dec. 21, anyone traveling and returning to Canada for trips lasting less than 72 hours must have a negative COVID test before crossing the border.

This is a change from Canada's relaxed rule last month which only required a negative test for trips lasting more than 72 hours.

Fully vaccinated Canadians were also allowed to depart and re-enter the country within 72 hours without a pre-entry test -- that has now changed.

Although this isn't the only action Canadian officials have taken to battle the spread of the omicron variant that has been rapidly spreading since its detection in November.

Capacities have been limited at restaurants, bars, malls and retailers to 50% and social gatherings inside restaurants have been limited to 10 people.
