CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) – A candlelight prayer vigil will be held Friday night in Chesterfield Township in honor of slain WWJ overnight anchor Jim Matthews.

The vigil, organized by family friends, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brandenburg Park on Jefferson Avenue on the shores of Anchor Bay.

A Facebook page for the event says the public is invited to “come shine for this family, remembering Jim and wrapping Nichole, Hunter and Rosie in prayer, love and light.”

Matthews, 57, was killed last Friday at his Chesterfield Twp. home, while his girlfriend Nichole Guertin and their children, Hunter and Rosie were attacked. Guertin and Matthews’ son remained hospitalized as of Wednesday.

An update posted to the GoFundMe page organized in support of the children says the 10-year-old is  “doing so well,” but the road to recovery remains long.

“He can open his eyes and squeeze his hands and even give thumbs up,” the update said. Donations to the fundraiser can be made here

On Monday 55-year-old Arthur Williamson was charged with seven felonies, including first-degree murder in the Sept. 23 attack.

Matthews’ brother, Joe Nicolai, told WWJ’s Charlie Langton earlier this week he is touched by the outpouring of support his family has received.

“It is absolutely amazing and wonderful how many people have reached out,” he said. “I never knew that my brother had touched so many people and touched so many lives in positive ways.”
