(WWJ) A teenager has been charged in the fatal stabbing of her 65-year-old grandmother in Canton.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said the 14-year-old girl was charged Saturday morning on first degree murder and second degree murder in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility in Detroit, in connection with the slaying early this week.

She was not charged as an adult, but she has been adult-designated.

This means "that upon conviction an adult designation allows the judge to have the option of sentencing the respondent as a juvenile, or as an adult, or to fashion a blended juvenile with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated," a press release from Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office read.

Police received a 911 call just before 8 a.m. Monday about a non-responsive woman, identified as 65-year-old Cynthia Mosby, at her home on Kimberly Drive, near Geddes and Michigan Ave. in Canton.

First responders arrived at the house to find Mosby dead. Her body was originally found by her son, the father of the suspect; according to the prosecutor's office.

Prosecutors say the teen had allegedly planned the murder and stabbed her grandmother "multiple times with a kitchen knife." She checked herself into a motel in Southgate afterward, where investigators found her the following day.

A motive for the killing is unknown.

“The fatal stabbing of Ms. Mosby is very sad and disturbing. Ms. Mosby was a nurse who was raising her granddaughter. "Prosecutor Worthy said in a release "Our prayers go out to her son and family. The 14-year-old girl is being adult designated because upon conviction it gives the judge the most flexibility during sentencing to provide options for rehabilitation of this very troubled youth.”
