ROYAL OAK TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A 29 year old Detroit man is facing charges after authorities say he carjacked an elderly woman at a Dollar Tree in Oakland County.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon in Royal Oak Township.

The 83 year old victim told police that a man, later identified by police as Angelo Mitchell, ripped her keys from her hand and stole her car in the parking lot of the store on Eight Mile Rd. and Wyoming.

Detectives looked through video footage and saw the suspect leave the shopping center though the Kroger parking lot, and enter an apartment complex nearby.

The apartment was searched and occupants interviewed. After interviews were conducted, the suspect was found at a relative's home in Detroit, where he was taken into custody.

Mitchell has since been charged with Carjacking; which doesn't have a set number of years if found guilty, but could be up to life. He's also charged with Robbery; a 15 year felony.

The woman's car was recovered.

“Carjacking is a violent crime that robs victims of security and property,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. “Targeting a senior out shopping on Sunday is especially shameful.”

Mitchell is being held in the Oakland County Jail.
