EAST LANSING (WWJ) -- An unidentified chemical forced the evacuation of Wells Hall on the campus of Michigan State University on Monday. Now officials say the building will remain closed this week.
Emergency crews were on the scene, late Monday morning, evaluating the mysterious substance.
University officials confirmed that they cleared the building out of what they called "an abundance of caution."
University Spokesperson Amber McCann added, in a statement: "The health and safety of our campus community is our top priority. There is no threat to the campus at this time but we ask the community to avoid the area."
In an update later Tuesday, MSU stated "This matter has been resolved, and the environment is safe."
Well Hall has been set to reopen Tuesday morning, but officials said they received additional information that suggested further evaluation of the building was need.
While the school said there is "no known threat" to the campus community, the building will be closed through Friday.
Wells Hall, on Red Cedar Rd., is a large academic building containing classrooms, lecture halls and offices for instructors.
Students with exams scheduled in the building will take their exams at a different location.
There were no reports that anyone has been sicked or harmed by the substance, and it's still unclear exactly where in the building it was found, or by whom.
