CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- A tax proposal is seeing some major pushback from residents of one Macomb County community.
The Chesterfield Township Parks and Recreation and Senior Services millage is stirring up some strong opinions before the primary, coming up next Tuesday. Aug. 4.
If approved, the millage would fund improvements to parks like waterfront parks on Lake St. Clair, the building of new parks, a new gym at the community center, pickleball courts, a dog park, new trails, and more.
While that might sound nice to some people, WWJ Newsradio 950's Luke Sloan reports there's a group of resident rallying against the millage, saying they don't want a new tax.
Many of them are putting Lines in their yards that say, "Vote no on the Parks and Rec millage."
Sloan asked Chesterfield Township Supervisor, Brad Kersten about what's causing this divide.
"This shouldn't be controversial; this is very straightforward," Kersten said. "We've got a good plan that was developed, and it's our view is it's only an enhancement to the community, and it's gonna make...the value of your home and your community surrounding even better."
"Again, no one likes to raise taxes," he said. "We understand that. We're respectful to that, but this is a direct impact to your own community, and these dollars aren't leaving."
Kersten said the measure does have a lot of support, and he believe the millage will have enough votes to pass on Tuesday.
