A 5-year-old boy was pulled from the burning home Tuesday afternoon where his mother was discovered dead from a homicide, police said.

The fire that left the child clinging to life in critical condition is a suspected arson. The child has severe burns and smoke inhalation.

The targeted home is on Clayburn, which is north of Warren Avenue, just after noon on Tuesday. Police say a neighborhood officer saw the fire while patrolling and called for backup.

First responders rescued the boy and discovered the mom, who had suffered a gunshot wound.

Investigators say the mother was still alive when they pulled her from the home, but she died shortly afterward.
