Child in police custody after stabbing injures 1 at Detroit Merit Charter Academy
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating the circumstances that led to one person being stabbed at a charter school earlier in the week, officials confirmed.
Detroit Merit Charter Academy, located on on Alter Road near Jefferson Avenue, confirmed the incident was isolated and the victim was recovering.
Police said they were called out to the school on Monday, December 18, around 2:15 p.m. of reports of a stabbing. One victim was located while the suspect, identified only as a minor, was detained.
The department did not state whether the victim was a student or a teacher. Additional information on the type of weapon used in the incident was also not released.
Former student Zaria Smiley, 19, told WXYZ she was surprised to hear about the alleged stabbing, stating her experience at the school -- which serves kindergarten to eight grade -- was "amazing."
But lately, the 19-year-old who occasionally volunteers at Detroit Merit stated she has noticed the overall attitude of students has changed.
"I think they just need more authority," she added.
A spokesperson for the school released the following statement about the incident, which remains an active case with Detroit police:
"While student privacy rights and the ongoing police investigation limit the details I can share, what I can say is that this was an isolated incident. The safety and well-being of our school community remains a top priority, and we are cooperating fully with the police investigation."
No other information was made available.
