STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- Two Good Samaritans are being credited for helping to stop two attempted kidnappings of young girls in two Macomb County communities.

According to witnesses, the latest incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clinton River Park North, on Van Dyke Ave., just north of 19 Mile Rd.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports the victim, a 7-year-old girl, had been playing at the park with her aunt and her 8-year-old cousin.

As they were preparing to leave, the man allegedly grabbed the girl, forced her into the front seat of his car and tried to take off. Before he could, the child's aunt jumped in and hung onto the steering wheel.

That's when the Good Samaritan intervened, witnesses said, pulling the suspect out of the car and holding him until police arrived and made an arrest.

The Good Samaritan is said to be a member of the police department's "Citizens On Patrol," program according to WDIV.

Langton said the suspect is a 23-year-old Shelby Township man who is accused in another kidnapping attempt in Clinton Township, earlier the same day.

According to Clinton Township Police, at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the 15-year-old victim was in the area of Clinton River Rd., east of Hayes Rd., when the suspect grabbed her around the head and neck and forced her into his car.

A Clinton Township resident who saw what was happening stepped in, police said, enabling the victim to get away. She ran to others for help, called 911, and the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle, described as a white sedan.

While Clinton Township Police were looking for the suspect, they learned of the Sterling Heights incident and the arrest, police said.

The Clinton Township PD said its detectives are now coordinating efforts with Sterling Heights detectives to seek charges from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

"We at the Clinton Township Police Department wish to extend our gratitude to all individuals who came to the aid of the juvenile female victim in this incident," police said, in a statement. "In addition, we also wish to relay our appreciation to those involved in thwarting the second abduction attempt in the City of Sterling Heights."

Charges could be filed by as soon as Wednesday for both attempted kidnappings.
