(WWJ) - A 63-year-old Clarkston man is dead after a tire flew over the Interstate 75 (I-75) median into his windshield around 4 o'clock Friday afternoon.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said the man driving a pickup truck was headed north on I-75 at the Davison Freeway when the "at-fault" vehicle, driving southbound, lost a tire.
The tire flew over the median wall and struck the windshield of the truck. MSP Troopers found the pickup against the wall and the driver unconscious. Authorities broke the window to gain access, but the caved in roof prevented first responders from getting to the driver.
MSP said the truck was so damaged, they had to use a chain to pull it away from the wall and get the victim out.
The Oakland County man was initially listed in critical condition but later died at the hospital.
The 34-year-old driver of the vehicle that lost a tire stopped at the scene and is cooperating with police.
The deadly crash shut down the Chrysler Freeway for more than two hours Friday afternoon into the evening.
The case will be sent to the Prosecutor's office to determine if any criminal charges will be filed.
