CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- A Macomb County animal shelter devastated by flooding is getting some help from the community.
A pipe burst on Wednesday at the Rejoyceful Animal Rescue in Clinton Township — destroying kennels, bedding, food and toys.
The rescue cares for about 300 animals, and 50 were inside when the building flooded. Some had to be rushed to safety.
The rescue said insurance isn't covering the damage because it was a plumbing issue unrelated to this week's drenching storms.
The good news? Donations are pouring in!
The shelter said, in a Facebook post: "To our beautiful village of supporters and friends, we'd like to express our utmost gratitude for the outpouring of support you all have given us in the last 24 hours. We are blown away by the generosity, the offers for physical help, supply donations, and the monetary donations that have come in.
"We woke up this morning with a feeling of dread and defeat, and we were absolutely positive after receiving our insurance claim denial that this was it for our rescue. Tonight, we feel relief. We feel we can do this, and we are ready to move forward and rebuild what we have worked so hard for."
For now, financial donations are welcome, but the shelter is not yet ready to receive physical donations of pet food and other supplies. Once the space is sanitized and ready for habitation, the shelter said it'll let people know on Facebook that it's once again ready to accept these items.
Janet, a Clinton Township resident who volunteers at the shelter, is touched by the level of community support.
Outside feeding the stray cats around the building Friday morning, she told WWJ's Luke Sloan she has faith that the shelter will be back up and running very soon.
"I believe that it will come back stronger," Janet said. "And people are now gonna be more aware of what we do, why we do it. So, yeah, I think it will come back a lot stronger."
