Clinton Township swears in first female police chief

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- Clinton Township made history today swearing in their first female chief of police.

A native to the Macomb County community, Dina Caringi has been with the Clinton Township Police Department (CTPD) for 21 years, working with the undercover drug unit and road patrol.

Caringi said she couldn’t be happier and is thrilled for this opportunity.

"The important thing for me is always to be mindful of where I came from and remember the mentorship I received and the people who believed in my ability not only as a woman but as a police officer," she said.

Caringi has been in law enforcement for 26 years starting out patrolling the 9th Precinct in Detroit for five years in the 1990s.

Furthermore, this isn’t the first time she’s been named “the first female” of anything. She became the township’s first female lieutenant of the detective bureau and last spring she was promoted to the first female to serve as the township’s captain.

That promotion to captain came two months after the passing of the previous chief of police, Fred Posavetz, who died from COVID complications in March of this year.

Caringi replaces Bruce Wade -- a veteran of the CTPD for 37 years -- who was named chief in April to guide the department following Posavetz' death until his pre-planned retirement in late October.
