CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) — A Clinton Township man is facing a long list of charges for allegedly using his 2-year-old son as “a human shield” during a standoff with police.

Dalvin Devonte Brooks was arraigned this week on 18 total counts, including assault with a dangerous weapon, child abuse and domestic violence.

The charges stem from an incident Sunday, Jan. 12 at an apartment in Clinton Township, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Brooks allegedly assaulted and pointed a gun at the mother of his child before pickup up the 2-year-old boy and holding him at gunpoint.

When officers showed up at the apartment, the prosecutor’s office says Brooks barricaded himself in a bedroom, “using his son as a human shield and pointing his gun at officers.”

Brooks eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.

He was charged with seven counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, one count of fourth-degree child abuse, one count of misdemeanor domestic violence and eight counts of felony firearm.

Brooks was also charged as a habitual fourth offender. His bond was set at $500,000 cash/surety. If bond is posted, Brooks would be required to wear a steel cuff GPS tether and have no contact with any victims.

"It is my duty to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our community,” Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, per a press release. “The alleged actions of this individual are reprehensible. Such acts of violence are intolerable, and we will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law to protect these victims and prevent further harm.”

Brooks’ next court date has been scheduled for Jan. 27.
