WYANDOTTE (WWJ) – Trick-or-treating has been canceled in a Downriver neighborhood, thanks to a cockroach infestation.
City officials say they’ve decided to block off a section of 20th Street in Wyandotte to Halloween trick-or-treaters to keep the cockroach infestation from spreading in the city, according to multiple reports.
Streets and sidewalks along 20th from Eureka to Grove, about a half-mile stretch, will be closed to vehicles and kids from 4-8 p.m. Monday, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.
The closure is to stop the roaches from latching onto costumes and getting into other homes. Another concern is if someone were to step on a cockroach, their eggs could survive on the shoe and be spread all over the neighborhood.
In a letter from the city’s engineer and posted in a Downriver Facebook group, officials say the cockroach infestation stems from one home where the city’s waste management picked up a load of garbage that was crawling with bugs, according to the Freep.
The home has since been vacated, but the city’s battle to get rid of the pests continues.
