
LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) - Authorities in Kent County confirmed the deaths of two men after a trench they were digging in western Michigan collapsed in on them.
According to The Detroit Free Press, the the Kent County Sheriff’s Office said the two men, ages 59 and 68, were working around 8:30 p.m. Friday in Lowell Township, just east of Grand Rapids, when the incident occurred.
The victims were digging out dirt to create a 14-foot-deep trench that would be used for drainage; the men were in the middle of constructing a pole barn nearby.
Officials said they weren't able to recover the bodies until after 2 a.m. Saturday.
The names of the two victims were not released by authorities, but they are both Alto natives.
No further information was made available by deputies; the circumstance surrounding the deaths remain under investigation at this time.
