CADILLAC (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway into a money scam in Northern Michigan.
According to Michigan State Police, con artists are passing counterfeit bills around the Traverse City area by ordering large amounts of fruit or produce from local markets, roadside stands, and u-pick farms, and then paying with fake money.
One recent incident resulted in a loss of $1,400 worth of produce after the owner of the market realized the cash payment was counterfeit.
Authorities are encouraging those who sell local produce in Michigan to proceed with extra caution, especially when dealing with large orders and cash payments.
Suspicious activity should be immediately reported to local law enforcement, or Michigan State Police.
