DETROIT (WWJ) -- A now-former Detroit police officer has been sentenced to probation, along with some jail time, after sending himself explicit photos from a woman’s phone during a traffic stop, and then showing up at her home.
Derond Martez Crawford, 34, pleaded no contest on May 6 to one count of Misconduct in Office.
On Wednesday, he was sentenced according to the plea agreement to two years of probation, with the final six months to be served in the Wayne County Jail.
In exchange for the plea, charges of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime and Interfering with a Telecommunications Device were dismissed, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
The charges stem from a March 3, 2026, traffic stop along Mound Road, investigators said.
Crawford pulled over a 22-year-old Detroit woman for improper license plates, and placed her under arrest for an outstanding warrant.
According to prosecutors, Crawford was using the woman's cell phone to contact her mother when he discovered explicit photos and digital images of the victim, and emailed them to himself without her consent.
When she got her phone back, the victim discovered the photos in emails that she did not send.
The next morning, Crawford went to the victim's home when he was off-duty, but she didn't answer the door, investigators said.
Crawford resigned from the Detroit Police Department, following his arrest.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, in a statement: "It is hard to imagine what the defendant was thinking when he engaged in this alleged conduct. He did not have an articulable reason to even look into the phone for anything other than her mother’s phone number in the first place and the steps he took after that intrusion were completely inappropriate.”
