(WWJ) A Detroit couple has been charged with the premediated murder of a 55-year-old woman who was found dead in the woods.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says 30-year-old Oscar DeAngelo Smith and 39-year-old Temmika Burgess of Detroit were acquainted with the victim, 55-year-old Michelle O'Neal of Detroit.

At around 5 p.m. on July 12, Detroit Police responded to a call about a body discovered in a wooded area at Hyde St. and Helen St. on Detroit's east side.

Officers arrived to find O'Neal dead, with a gunshot wound to the head.

It is alleged, according to prosecutors, that the defendants fatally shot O'Neal, took her lifeless body to the woods, left it there and fled.

Prosecutors said an investigation by Detroit Police led to the arrests of Smith and Burgess on Monday.

Further details — including how the defendants and the victim knew each other, and what led to the slaying — have not yet been released.

Smith has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Felon in Possession for a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm. Burgess has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Felony Firearm, one count of Tampering with Evidence, and one count of Third-Degree Arson.

The couple was scheduled to be arraigned in 36th District Court on Thursday.

They face life in prison without parole if convicted.
