DETROIT (WWJ) -- In response to worsening COVID-19 infection rates in the city, Detroit Public Schools is temporarily shifting to online learning.
According to school officials, this decision comes after finding that Detroit's infection rate has exceeded 40% for a seven-day average, and continues to increase.
Remote learning for all students in the district will begin on Thursday, Jan. 6 until Friday, Jan. 14, and will follow the regular school’s bell schedule per state requirements.
In-person learning will resume once the city's infections rate decreases to more "normal levels," said school officials.
Students, if eligible, can pick up laptops for remote learning at their school this Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. or Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be laptop pick-up times next week on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
IT hotlines and Hubs will be open next week for family and student support.

This shift to online learning follows DPS cancelling all classes this week through Wednesday, Jan. 5 in order to test all employees for COVID-19 before students return to school.
Officials said the school district would use the collected results to determine how to proceed for the remainder of the week and in the weeks to come.
Meanwhile, then free DPS COVID testing sites will operate Thursday, Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis. The testing sites are for district employees, select contractors and students only. The locations are:
