TROY (WWJ) – A fire at the Somerset Collection in Troy has been extinguished, with damage mostly contained to a lower-level restaurant.

Officials tell WWJ the fire started in the kitchen area of the Capital Grille, which is on the first floor of the mall, next to Macy's and right below the food court.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, but officials said there was an issue with the ventilation system and the smoke spread up through the vents and into shops and the food court. Thick black smoke was seen pouring out of the the roof.

Fire crews have extinguished the flames, but were still working to clear smoke and put out hot spots, as of 6:30 p.m.

Witnesses told WWJ's Jonathan Carlson they were in the food court when black smoke began billowing from the Chick-Fil-A restaurant. People then began evacuating the mall across the skywalk.

While there were dozens of fire trucks and ambulances at the scene, Carlson reports nobody had to be treated for any injuries.

One store employee inside the mall told WWJ's Ryan Marshall black smoke came spilling through the vents, and they knew they had to evacuate.

Drivers were being told to avoid Big Beaver Road as dozens of firefighters and trucks were working at the scene.
